In 2010 it’s 30 years of Solidarity. Many people would remember the strikes at The Gdansk Shipyard in 1980 and the impact it had in the following years on the face of Europe, leading to The Independence of Poland and many other Eastern European countries, the fall of The Berlin Wall and the end of The Iron Curtain.
Poland couldn’t have done it alone. It was the support and solidarity of individuals, organisations and countries across the world that brought the change.
We want to celebrate it together.
“Tell me your Solidarity story” is a project developed by Merseyside Polonia in partnership with European Solidarity Centre and other Polonia organisations across England. We want to promote positive image of the Polish Community in UK, build better connections with local residents through cultural awareness and understanding as well as develop good working relations between Polonia organisations.
“Tell me your Solidarity story” will present a display of large format images portraying the support Solidarity received from across the world and help it offered to countries in need. The exhibition “Solidarity of the Nations” will travel across England to share our celebration.
“Tell me your Solidarity story” will present the cinematic look at the events in 1980 through the artistic vision of Andrzej Wajda and his outstanding story of the “Man of Iron” presenting a feature film with elements of documentary footage giving the inside experience of the fight for freedom.
“Tell me your Solidarity story” project will show the relevance of the historical events to today’s world and offer at each city where the Exhibition will be presented an opportunity to find out more about worker’s rights and responsibilities, through the workshops offered in partnership with Trade Union Congress.
“Tell me your Solidarity story” is an opportunity for everybody to share their experience of Solidarity through stories and photographs that can be submitted through the website: www.tellmeyoursolidaritystory.com and the collected works will be presented to the European Solidarity Centre and selected stories publish as part of the album celebrating 30 years of Solidarity.
